VFW BASEBALL: Worthington sweeps Slayton

WORTHINGTON -- Worthington's VFW baseball team left no doubt Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader with Slayton 17-5 and 13-5.

"We hit the ball very well," Worthington coach T.D. Hostikka said. "I pitched a couple of 15-year-olds to get them some experience and they showed me something."

Roque Soto was the first of those 15-year-olds, getting the win in Game 1 by throwing four innings, giving up two earned runs on one walk, while striking out six.

The offense took it from there as Ryan Lee was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Soto was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Nate Braaksma was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Blake Fauske was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

In Game 2, Braaskma gave up one earned run in five innings on five hits, while striking out two.

"I was very impressed by Nate Braaskma in Game 2," Hostikka said. "He threw strikes."

Tristan Sorenson was 1-for-1 with two runs and an RBI, Lee was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Braaksma was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to help lead Worthington. Adrian Mannzo added two runs on a 2-for-3 day, while Cole Dierks was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and Landon Ahlers was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.

Worthington (15-6, 4-1) will travel to Luverne Monday.

Amateur baseball

PIPESTONE -- Hadley knocked off Pipestone in amateur baseball action 5-2 Thursday.

Justin Reinsma got the win on the mound, striking out nine in nine innings. Alex Petersen was 1-for-3, Matt Ackerman was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Max Zwart and Eric Wieneke each had an RBI for Hadley (4-8, 4-6).

Brandon Karels was 2-for-3 for Pipestone.

Hadley will host Jackson and Marshall Sunday.

18-and-under softball

NEW ULM -- The Worthington Area Storm split with New Ulm in 18-and-under softball action Thursday.

The Storm won 11-8 in Game 1. Angela Robinson got the win, pitching six innings and striking out three, while going 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Storm. Rebecca Kazemba was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs, Christine Kazemba was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Brandie Timmerman and Emily Robinson each added RBIs for the Storm (7-3).

The Storm fell 7-5 in Game 2. Christine Kazemba and Rebecca Kazeman each pitched three innings, striking out four and walking four combined.

Robinson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Kayla Lonneman, Timmerman and Amy aBents each had an RBI for the Storm.

Worthington will head to Hutchinson for a tournament Saturday.

16-and-under softball

SLEEPY EYE -- Worthington's 16-and-under softball team split with Sleepy Eye Thursday, winning 9-8 in Game 1 and losing 15-1 in Game 2.

Paige Kinley was 2-for-4, Brianna Mullaney was 2-for-3, Morgan LeBrun was 1-for-1 and Katie Rogers and Aleanna Heig were both 1-for-3, while Ida Rogers-Ferguson picked up the win on the mound.

Worthington (3-3) only mustered up two hits in Game 2. Kinley had a triple and a single for Worthington.

Worthington will host Windom Tuesday.
