VFW BASEBALL: Worthington VFW sweeps SH
WORTHINGTON -- Worthington VFW put on a pitching clinic in its sweep of Sacred Heart in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Worthington Middle School.
In Game 1, Tristan Sorenson gave up two hits and one earned run in four innings, while striking out 10. Ryan Lee got the save, pitching the remaining three innings, giving up no runs and striking out six, as Post 3958 went on to a 5-2 victory.
"The story of the day was pitching," Worthington coach T.D. Hostikka said. "In the first game, we approached it as business and those two 16-year-olds threw strikes, had batters ahead of pitches and just kept any hitters off balance in the box.
"I was so proud of them."
Lee had an RBI single in the first inning en route to a 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Trevor Wietzema was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Oliver Wolyniec was 1-for-3 with three RBIs in Game 1. Sorenson was also 1-for-3 with a run for Worthington in Game 1.
Worthingon made it four wins in a row with its 2-1, five-inning victory in Game 2, as the pitching was, once again, stellar.
Roque Soto got the win on the mound, giving up one earned run in two innings, while striking out two and giving up two hits. Sorenson got the save on the mound, pitching the final inning and striking out two.
Wolyniec (1-for-1) and Lee (1-for-2) each scored on a sacrifice fly from Soto.
"The sacrifice fly wasn't hit too deep, but the defense just wasn't paying attention," Hostikka said. "I had the runner tagging to third, they threw it to second and I just sent him home.
"Good thing I did because it proved to be the winner."
Worthington pitching struck out 23 batters on the day.
"They threw strikes, which is the name of the game," Hostikka said. "We still need to work on driving hitters in.
"We left five batters on base in the last two innings, but that's youth. It will come around."
Worthington will host Marshall Blue Monday.
