Volleyball: SWU's Place, W-WG's Herding near milestones
MARSHALL — Courtney Place moved four kills away from the 1,000th in her career Saturday as her Southwestern United volleyball team went 2-3 in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge in Marshall.
SWU defeated Bloomington Jefferson and Le Sueur-Henderson and lost matches to Waconia, Andover and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. There were 32 teams in the tournament.
On the day, Place totaled 63 kills with 21 digs. Teammate Andrea Hinkeldey had 23 kills, 22 digs and six blocks. Kailee Wendland added 34 kills and 36 digs.
As a team, SWU put 94 percent of its serves in play.
WESTBROOK — Host Westbrook-Walnut Grove went a perfect 5-0 in its own volleyball tournament Saturday, winning all five games by 2-0 game margins. The Chargers beat Fulda, Lincoln HI, Lakeview, Adrian and New Ulm Cathedral.
Abby Herding was 58-for-558 serving with 12 aces. She also had 24 digs and 72 set assists.
Herding, a sophomore, is only 16 set assists away from 1,000 in her career.
Dayna Comnick was 42-for-48 serving for W-WG, witih 14 aces. She added 45 kills and 34 digs. Teammate Cassidy Mischke was 40-for-44 serving with seven aces and 11 kills.
