WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Fire Department responded to a house fire at 3:56 p.m. Friday.

The fire at 1824 Dover St. started in the basement of the property owned by Jim Shows. According to Worthington Police Chief Rick von Holdt, the blaze burned hot enough to create a hole in the floor above the fire.

“There was smoke and water damage, but the house is salvageable,” von Holdt said.

Two people lived in the home. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it appeared to responders that the fire started due to Shows’ actions.

Shows attempted to put the fire out himself with an extinguisher and garden hose before calling 911.

“Considering where it was, I would classify it as moderate damage,” von Holdt said.

The Worthington Ambulance was dispatched for smoke inhalation, and Shows was treated and released at the scene.

“Once again, I commend my guys,” von Holdt said. “They got there and we did defense outside until we could get in there without anyone getting hurt.”
