William ""Bill" Peters Sr.

William “Bill” Peters Sr. was born on September 20, 1928 in Worthington, the son of Herman and Dora (Guthardt) Peters. Bill was thirteen when his father died, after which he moved to South Dakota, where he lived with Gert & Floyd Packer, helping them farm. He later moved to California where he worked on construction for one year. Bill returned to Minnesota and worked as a plumber in Brewster for two years. He enlisted in the Army in 1949 and was discharged in 1952. While in the Army he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, Bill was a paratrooper during the Korean War, making around fifty parachute jumps. After Bill was discharged, he worked for Carolina Steel in North Carolina for three years. He moved back to Worthington where he worked in maintenance for Campbell Soup for thirty five years retiring as manager of maintenance and engineering in 1990. Bill married Betty Ann Pruitt on September 19, 1951 in Draper, North Carolina. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family. Bill died on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the MN Veterans Home in Luverne, MN.

Bill is survived by three children, William “Chip” (Deb) Peters of Worthington, MN, Shane (Kathy) Peters of Bennington, NE, and Jodi (John) Berghuis of Lincoln, NE; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Maree Rose and Vi (Earl) Obermoller; one brother Hans (Mavis) Peters. Bill is preceded in death by his wife Betty Ann; sisters Gertrude and Ann; brothers Henry, Herman Jr. (Buddy) and Burnell.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Round Lake with Pastor Joe Behnke officiating. Burial will be at the Worthington Cemetery with military rites.

Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington. Visitation will be also from 10-11:00 am on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Round Lake, MN.

Benson Funeral Home is coordinating the arrangements.
