Winterfest medallion found
WORTHINGTON -- She's been following the clues in the Daily Globe, but it wasn't until Thursday morning that Pat Henderscheidt decided to do a little searching for the Winterfest 2012 medallion.
She almost stepped on it.
Henderscheidt turned the medallion in at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce office Thursday morning and was rewarded with a basket of goodies donated by local area businesses -- including a bird house and bird seed, a boneless pork loin, gift certificates to businesses, a King Turkey Day cookbook, mugs, a candle and a blanket.
She also got a gift certificate to attend Saturday's performance of "The Legends of Motown and More" at the Worthington Memorial Auditorium.
"Perfect!" Henderscheidt said. "Saturday is my birthday. My husband and I will go to the show."
With no hesitation, Henderscheidt admitted she will be 69 years old and doesn't care who knows.
Thursday morning, she said, she and her husband were having coffee and reading the paper.
He read her the latest clue, and she told him she thought the medallion was in Chautauqua Park.
He disagreed, believing the medallion to be in another location.
"He was wrong," she said with a smile. "I'm always right."
After he left for work, Henderscheidt decided to take a look.
Out to the park she went, walking along the shore of Lake Okabena behind the bandshell at the park.
"The rocks were quite slippery, and at one point I thought, 'You're going to break your leg,'" she said with a laugh. "To get better footing I took one more step down and there it was!"
Henderscheidt said she has gone out searching for the King Turkey Day medallion a few times, but normally hasn't had much time to do so.
But she has recently retired from her position of housing manager and marketing at The Meadows, so has a little more time on her hands.
Finding the medallion is exciting, she said, even though she knew searching on the slippery rocks was a bit dangerous.
"But I've been known to do crazy things," Henderscheidt admitted happily.
For those who are curious, the final clues were:
Friday -- Here I sit under the shade of a big rock.
It's so cold I'm in shock.
If you've been paying attention you could be the winner.
Come get me and use one of the prizes for dinner.
Saturday -- You would think that I am lost, or perhaps out of place.
Here in this spot, I cannot see a single band member's face.
Go around to the back of the bandshell, that's where I hide.
Look along the shoreline, before I am washed out with the tide!
