Womens college basketball: Cold shooting ends season for Lady Jays
Worthington Minnesota 300 11th Street / P.O. Box 639 56187

COON RAPIDS — A fine season on the hardwood came to an abrupt end for the womens basketball team of Minnesota West Community and Technical College.

The Lady Jays, shooting 16 percent in the opening half, trailed by nine points at the break and weren’t able to fully recover. Anoka-Ramsey advanced to the national tournament as Region 13 championship with a 65-55 victory on their home floor Sunday afternoon over Minnesota West.

Going on a few runs in the second half, Minnesota West cut the game to a point at a few different junctures but it still wasn’t enough, Lady Jays head coach Mike Fury said. The Golden Rams always had an answer.

“We never made a run and it’s disappointing,” he said. “Our shooting just left us. You have to give their defense credit for that one though.”

Kristen Andersen, a freshman from Worthington, scored 16 points as did sophomore Tiffany Gehl of Fulda.

Anoka-Ramsey’s Mataya Racek, a freshman guard, paced all scorers with 19 points. Olivia Antilla posted 17.

Minnesota West ends its season at a 22-6 mark.

Sunday’s loss was the third meeting between the two teams. In concerence play, Anoka-Ramsey claimed both games. The Golden Rams won a 70-67 nailbiter in Worthington and took a 90-75 game when the teams played in Coon Rapids.

“Tonight we’re not feeling so good about this one,” Fury said. “But I’m sure that when we look back we’ll say that 22-6 was a pretty good season.”
