Wrestling: JCC tops Worthington; Worthington pins Marshall
JACKSON —Despite a flat start out of the gates in a wrestling double dual with Marshall and Jackson County Central Thursday night, Worthington got its bearings straight to defeat the Tigers in the opening dual, 51-25. In the nightcap, Class A’s No. 1-ranked Huskies were too strong in a 45-21 decision, but the Trojans wrestled much better.
“We wrestled first and, to be honest, we came out flat. We were on our backs and gave up some pins, losing some matches we thought we should have won,” Worthington head wrestling coach Mark Prunty said. “Against Jackson, in the paper it will look like they thumped us pretty good, but we were happy with our effort. We won six matches against a very, very good quality team.”
Trojans sophomore Hser Moo Pwae defeated Marshall’s Jackson Hughes by tech fall to get his team rolling at 113 pounds, but the Tigers responded. They built a lead off of wins at 126, 132 and 138 before Worthington rallied, winning each of the remaining tilts in some fashion or another. Zach Bruns (152) and Nic Putnam (182) each recorded falls in the turn of events while Torey Rogers (160), Carson Hagen (195), Peter Abraham (220) and Trevor Wietzema (285) all received forfeits.
Putnam’s pin was his first win for his career. His effort, along with those of the four sophomores that pack the middle weights for the team, were bright spots on the night for Prunty.
“Nic’s varsity win was nice to see, and we were very pleased with our sophomores in the middle. We need them to step up and they have been,” Prunty said. “It was good to see them on the good side of some close matches.”
Against JCC, Worthington’s Hser Eh Pwae defeated JCC’s Jacob Tvinnereim by 12-11 decision at 106 pounds to kick off a string of four bouts won by the Trojans. Jeffrey Comacho (132), King Blanchette (138), Cody Michelson (145) and Torey Rogers (152) each had wins for WHS through the middle.
JCC’s Paden Moore pinned Zach Kempema in 1:39 at 160 pounds and Chris Baker took 3:21 to stick Putnam. A frustrating outcome was handed to the Trojans as, in overtime, 195-pounder Carson Hagen was called for grabbing Keegan Moore’s singlet. Moore was given a 5-4 victory. Justin Tirevold won for JCC over Abraham at 220 pounds to seal the victory on his team’s home mat. Trevor Wietzema, at 285, pulled off a 7-6 decision in overtime over Nate Horn.
“Both Carson and Keegan battled hard. It is one of those things that happens, I guess,” Prunty commented regarding the match at 195. “I think both the JCC crowd and our crowd probably would have liked to have seen more of that match, but that is what happens.”
