WORTHINGTON — Step one has been cleared for the Worthington Trojans as they wrestled well against Luverne in the second round of Section 3AA’s South Sub-section Tournament to advance along the tournament trail.

With their 50-19 win against the Cardinals, the Trojans move to 1-0 in the postseason. They will wrestle Quad County Friday evening in Granite Falls. The winner of that dual will then wrestle the winner of an opposite semifinal — between Fairmont/Martin County West and Dawson-Boyd —for a trip to the state tournament.

“I think it was good to get back on the mat again after that long break,” Worthington head coach Mark Prunty said. “Overall, it was a good match. Luverne made it tough and there were a lot of tough matches.”

Luverne, seeded fifth, found itself victorious in a few of the evening’s close matches against Worthington, but the Trojans were able to hold their own and do damage control where wins weren’t picked up.

Worthington won nine matches in the dual in some way, shape or form, including head-to-head bouts won by sophomores Hser Eh Pwae (106) and Hser Moo Pwae (113), senior Anthony Luft (126), sophomore Cody Michelson (145) and seniors Zach Kempema (160) and Blake Schroeder (170).

Luverne had victories against the Trojans from freshman Will Natte (120), senior Cody Hess (132), sophomore Adam Fodness (138), freshman Solomon Nielsen (152) and senior Spencer Oeltjenbruns (182).

The Cardinals used four falls and a string of seven matches won through the middle weights to defeat Tracy-Milroy-Balaton /Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the first round.

“The kids wrestled very hard. We adjusted our lineup to try to get better matchups and pull out a team victory against Worthington, but they wrestle tough,” Luverne head coach Craig Schneider said. “They’re a well-coached group of kids and they wrestled well tonight.”

Also in the first round, New Ulm defeated Fulda/Murray County Central. The Warriors saw their season come to an end but received pins from sophomores Clayton Hartle (113) and Ben Blanchette (126) in the 69-12 loss.

“New Ulm has got a decent team and there is a reason they’re seeded third and we’re seeded sixth,” Fulda/MCC head coach Dan Blankenship said. “Clayton did his job and Ben pinned his wrestler. We have to stay off our backs and wrestle harder.”

Second-seeded Fairmont/Martin County West defeated third seed New Ulm in the second round, 55-13.

Worthington senior Blake Schroeder, with a fall in 2:31 over Luverne senior Dalton Jacobsma, secured his 100th career victory and his 50th career pin. He was one of three seniors who wrestled their final matches on their home mat.

“For our three seniors who wrestled, it was their last time on the mat and they went out in style with all three getting pins,” Prunty said. “Anthony, Zach and Blake have done that for us all year. The season isn’t over, but they’ll be missed next year.”
