YOUTH HOCKEY: Squirts take third at Brookings Hockey Tournament
BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Worthington Trojans squirt hockey team won two of three games last weekend en route to a third-place finish at the Brookings Hockey Tournament.
Worthington fell behind 1-0 before scoring seven unanswered goals during a 7-1 victory against Brookings in the quarterfinals.
The Trojans' Carlos Garcia scored three goals for a hat trick. He was assisted by Jack Black (on two goals) and Kip Jenson (on one goal). Traeton Holt added two goals (assisted by Jenson, Colby Nickel and Zach Ahrenstorff). Black and Nickel also produced unassisted goals.
Jase Jenson scored five goals as Breckenridge/Wahpeton topped Worthington 7-6 in the semifinals.
Garcia netted four more goals for the Trojans (assisted by Kip Jenson and Krew Aljets). Black and Kip Jenson also added unassisted goals for Worthington.
Trojans goalie Eddie Canales turned away 31 of 38 shots in the loss.
Zach Ahrenstorff broke a 3-all third-period tie by scoring a top-shelf goal as Worthington earned third place after preserving a 4-3 win against OAHE (Pierre, S.D.).
With 5 minutes left, Ahrenstorff skated through the OAHE defense to put away the game-clinching goal.
Logan Kluever scored the first Trojan goal (unassisted) before Kip Jenson (Garcia assist) and Black had Worthington's next two tallies.
The Trojans take on Sleepy Eye/New Ulm in a first-round district playoff game this weekend at Windom.
