YOUTH HOCKEY: Worthington wins district tournament
WINDOM -- The Worthington Trojans squirt hockey team won the B Division District Hockey Tournament, which took place in Windom last weekend.
In its first game, Worthington defeated New Ulm/Sleepy Eye 8-2.
The teams battled back-and-forth for the first two periods, but neither was able to put the puck in the net. In the third period, the Trojans took control by scoring six answered goals to claim the victory.
Carlos Garcia led Worthington with a five-goal performance (assisted once by Colby Nickel and three times by Kip Jenson). Jack Black also scored three goals (one assisted by Traeton Holt and two unassisted tallies).
Krew Aljets stepped up and played well in goal.
In the second game, Worthington bounced the Boji Blizzard 7-2.
The Trojans were led by Logan Kluever, who picked up a hat trick. It was his first unassisted hat trick of the season.
Jenson (unassisted), Chris Henry (assisted by Jenson), Black (unassisted) and Garcia (unassisted) also scored goals for Worthington.
In the championship game, Worthington defeated Marshall 5-1 to claim the trophy.
Garcia scored the Trojans' first goal (assisted by Jenson), while Holt scored the second goal (assisted by Alexis Lyons) to break a 1-all tie.
Zach Ahrenstorff scored the final three goals of the game (one assisted by Colby Hastings and two unassisted) to help lead Worthington to victory.
The Trojans hosts Luverne at 7 p.m. Friday at the Worthington Arena. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Worthington plays at Luverne.
