Worthington, Luverne win conference matches

Danny Penaredondo was victorious for Worthington at No. 1 singles over Paul Prunty, 6-1, 6-2, while Alex Stewart won a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Bryce DeWilde at No. 2 singles.

John Shepherd needed three sets, but came away with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spencer Kruse at No. 3 singles.

PA’s Matt Griebal picked up the Arrows only victory with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Alex Myrom at No. 4 singles.

The Trojan doubles made a clean sweep, as Tim Roos and Adam Vosburgh defeated Austin Faber and Ryan Delaney 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

The team of Taylor Weiner and Mitchell Benson was victorious at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-4, over Jared VanderPoel and Joel Eeten of PA.

Dayton Williamson and David Sorenson defeated Shelby Jones and Jamie Lammers 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

In exhibition play, Worthington’s Nezir Bardan and Anthony Kellen picked up an 8-3, 8-1 victory.

Worthington will be at the conference meet Thursday.

Luverne 7, RV 0

LUVERNE — With a sweep of Redwood Valley, the Luverne Cardinals completed a perfect 4-0 conference season and claimed the Southwest Conference boys’ tennis title.

Sebastian Sousa Soares defeated Kurt Larson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Diego Federsffield defeated Nick Schmidt 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Zach Sanderson was victorious over Anthony Dunne at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Nick Sandager defeated Sam Schmidt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

“The singles really showed up today and played very well,” Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said. “They all worked the point until they had an advantage and then finished it off.”

While the doubles were closer, the results were the same for the Cardinals (10-3).

At No. 1, Matt Kreuch and Weston Sawtelle defeated Josh Lechner and Pat Raddatz, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 10-6.

The team of Jamie Vickery and Erik Stegeman won over Shane Gewerth and Jared Arentson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Joel Wohnoutka and Austin Lee made quick work of Dave Houghton and Brandon Arentson, 6-3, 6-1.

“The doubles teams all worked hard today for their wins,” Antoine said. “It always seems like we start out slowly in doubles and then find a way to get back into it.”

Luverne will be at the Southwest Conference tournament Thursday at Redwood Falls.
