A gasoline guarantee

Scholtes Auto World part of national price protection policy

WORTHINGTON — At a time during which gas prices continue to soar, Worthington’s Scholtes Auto World is offering its own economic stimulus package of sorts.

With the purchase of most Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles, customers can enroll in the “Let’s Refuel America” program and receive a gas card that immediately lowers their gas price to $2.99 a gallon — and keeps it there for three years. The offer is available at 3,511 U.S. Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealerships through June 2.

“It’s something new, and I think it’s the first time they’ve actually put some guarantee on how much you pay for your fuel,” Scholtes VP Tim Scholtes said. “With the concern of consumers about fuel prices, this really is a guarantee for people to buy fuel at a reasonable price.”

Of course, $2.99 didn’t seem like a reasonable price for gas terribly long ago. With the $4-per-gallon mark on the horizon, however, Scholtes and other dealerships are hoping car buyers find the fixed rate appealing.

“It’s pretty simple,” Scholtes explained. “You get a special gas card, put the gas card in at the pump and your credit card gets billed.”

Scholtes noted that numerous Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicle get good gas mileage. For example, the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Dodge Avenger, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot and Dodge Caliber each get better than 28 gallons per gallon on the highway.

People buying vehicles such as diesel-powered trucks, though, could really save, Scholtes said.

“People buying a vehicle with not a good gas mileage may benefit more,” Scholtes said. “It depends ... on the vehicle.”

Scholtes also isn’t ruling out the possibility of the “Let’s Refuel America” program being extended. The guarantee promotion went into effect May 7.

“I think we’ve had a good response,” he said. “I think some people will take the fuel option, and some will take a bigger rebate. The deal has sure caught a lot of attention.”
