Letter: More variety needed in business choices

There has been a lot of talk of a third grocery store opening and the only thing I can think is “why?”

There has been a lot of talk of a third grocery store opening and the only thing I can think is “why?”

If in fact another store opens, who will benefit? Jobs will be created initially but eventually customers will be funneled off, causing less sales. This means less hours or even loss of jobs at all three.

There are so many opportunities for new shops, but it seems like the only ones opening are already here in some form. How many pharmacies do we have in town now? I find the lack of variety surprising. Every holiday season I hear/see ads to “shop local” but find myself going to Sioux Falls. Spending the extra couple of bucks in town does not bother me, but if I have to make the trip to find what I can’t find here, I do all my shopping there.

When was the last time there was a book shop in town? Or a place to buy a movie that’s not a new release? Elite Audio will special order music not in stock. Prices may not be the cheapest, but they take care of customer needs. If the community cannot accommodate its people, how can it ask the people the same?
