FARGO, N.D. - A new sport utility vehicle belonging to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office was totaled early today when a vehicle slammed into the back of the SUV as it was parked at the scene of an earlier accident, authorities said.
Clay County Lt. Steve Todd was not inside the 2008 Ford Explorer when it was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Justin M. Anderson, 26, of Fergus Falls, at 2:41 a.m. on Interstate 94 about seven miles east of Moorhead, according to the Minnesota State Patrol and Clay County Chief Deputy Matt Ciiro.
Anderson was taken to Innovis Hospital in Fargo for minor injuries, the patrol said in a news release.
Todd had been assisting a state trooper at the scene of an accident in which a pickup driven by Matthew Guck, 18, of Plymouth, Minn., swerved to avoid hitting a deer and hit a bridge railing. The pickup was blocking a westbound lane of I-94 after the accident, which was reported at 1:43 a.m.
Guck was taken to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo for minor injuries, the patrol said.
Ciiro said the sheriff’s office just got the SUV in April.
“The rear end’s basically gone,” he said.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the rear-end accident, Ciiro said.
