SLEEPY EYE — One bad inning spelled the end Tuesday for Worthington’s American Legion baseball team.
Eagle Lake scored five runs — all with two outs — in the fourth inning en route to a 7-3 victory over Worthington, which was eliminated from the 2nd District, Division 1 playoffs.
“We had one bad inning where they scored five,” Worthington coach Joe Rezek said. “And that pretty much ruined everything.”
Worthington scored two runs in the fifth on Derek Busswitz’s two-run double to pull to within two, but Eagle Lake answered with a run in each the seventh and eighth innings.
Busswitz went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Kyle Vaske went 2-for-3 with a run, and Tony Jansen went 2-for-2, including a solo home run in the third inning that gave Worthington a 1-0 lead.
Matt King struck out eight in six innings but suffered the loss for Worthington, which defeated Eagle Lake during the regular season.
“Overall, it was a fun season,” Rezek said. “It was just a shame to lose this game.”
