MARSHALL — Four Worthington VFW baseball players contributed Thursday in the South’s 16-9 victory over the North in the Dale Erickson Classic.

Kirk McBreen started at shortstop and went 4-for-4 with a double, and Steven Kremer, who made his second All-Star appearance and started at catcher, went 1-for-1 to lead the South, which had 19 hits.

“It was quite an honor,” Kremer said. “Having four guys go was pretty good; it shows we’re a good team.”

Mitchell Jensen, who had two hits, started in right field and pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Stuart Rogers, who hadn’t pitched since July 8, entered in relief and retired the North in order in the sixth inning.

“It kind of surprised me, Rogers said. “I just went out there, threw strikes and let them hit the ball.”

The call to send Rogers to the mound was made by a familiar face. Worthington coach Ryan Weber and Slayton coach Ryan Beers were co-coaches for the South team.

“It’s pretty easy (to coach) — you just tell the kids to do what they do best,” Weber said. “It’s always good to see the best players, who have had the best seasons, play against each other.

“It was a lot of fun.”

Slayton’s Eric Wieneke, Alex Petersen and Kyle DeLong also played for the South, which led 11-0 after two innings.

Worthington won the District 3 title and earned its first trip to the state tournament since 2001.

Post 3958 will face an opponent yet to be determined at 11:15 Thursday.
