ALBERT LEA — Despite forfeiting a total of four matches Tuesday, Worthington High School’s girls tennis team narrowly avoided a sweep at the Albert Lea tournament.
The Trojans forfeited their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches in both a 4-3 loss to Lyle/Austin-Pacelli and a 7-0 loss to Albert Lea.
Sameera Nalla cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles, and Sabrina Klein won 7-5, 6-1 in No. 4 singles in the first contest of the day, against Lyle/Austin-Pacelli.
Amy Schutte earned Worthington’s other victory. The junior held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory in No. 2 singles.
Worthington won just five games and failed to win a set against Albert Lea, the host team, in the nightcap.
“We had good competition,” Worthington coach Mike Marquardt said. “Albert Lea was more consistent and had better placement.
“I think the girls are playing really well. We had a good showing.”
The Trojans will host Sleepy Eye at 10 a.m. Thursday.
