George Frederick Schuster, 74, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, due to complications of a long battle with Chronic Leukocytic Leukemia. He donated his body to the Mayo Medical School of Anatomy in hopes that it would help the search for a cure for CLL.
A celebration of his life was held 11 a.m. Monday, August 25, at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Titonka, with visitation one hour prior to the services, with Pastor Bill Embry officiating.
George Frederick Schuster was born August 4, 1934, in Murray County, Minnesota, to Arthur George Schuster and Marie Wilhelmina Wiener Schuster. He grew up in the rural Fulda area, graduating from high school in 1952. On September 18, 1955, George married Helen Hellwinkel, and to this union four children were born, Lorie Jo, Mark, Terry and Daniel. George moved to Titonka in November, 1958, and owned and operated Titonka Farm Store for 42 years. Helen was killed in a car accident December 22, 1987. On April 7, 1990, George married Linda (Teig) Adams at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Titonka, and welcomed Lori and Bret Adams to his family.
George was a member of Good Hope Lutheran
Church, a board member of the Titonka Burt Communications Company, and the Britt Draft Horse Association. Over the years he had been a volunteer fireman and was active in many local church and community organizations and events.
George is survived by his wife, Linda, children Lori Jo (Marvin) Fangman, Clive, Iowa, March Schuster, Phoenix, Ariz., Terry Schuster, Phoenix, Ariz., Daniel (Bridget) Schuster, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lori Adams (Jack Karn), Portland, Ore., and Bret Adams, Oelwein, Iowa, grandchildren Abi (Brendon Hoppenworth) Fangman, Cali Fangman, Nicole Schuster, and Henry Schuster. Siblings, Aletha Gerdes, Beverly Jandl, Anna (Garman) Guthrie, Raymond (Barbara) Schuster, Edwin (Mary) Schuster, and Bernice (Robert) Bunkers. Mother-in-law, Marjorie Teig, Brothers-in-law, Duane Hellwinkel, Larry (Margaret) Teig, and Joe (Catherine) Teig, sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Donald) Hecht, Charlotte (Pat) Brock, and Cathy (Ron) Johnson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
George was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Helen, grandson Jack Henry Schuster, in-laws Carl and Clara Hellwinkel, father-in-law, Luther Teig, brothers-in-law, Roger Hellwinkel, Martin Jandl Jr., and James Gerdes.
In lieu of flowers, George wanted memorials given to the Titonka Public Library, American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, Rochester, or Mayo Clinic CLL Research, C/O Dr. Neil Kay, Rochester.
