Today, youths around southwest Minnesota will return to school. Iowans, meanwhile, have already resumed classes, meaning the 2008-2009 school year is now officially in full swing.
That means several things. Among them: Exercise caution on the roads.
Around schools and throughout our neighborhoods each day, children of all ages will be out and about. Some will be walking to school or, while the weather’s still warm, riding bike. Many others will be riding the bus. Some high school students will be behind the wheel themselves.
Whether it be a Friday night high school football game at Trojan Field, an evening concert or some other extracurricular event, care should also be exercised on the roads. In evening hours, it is not uncommon for youths and adults alike to dart across a street or parking lot before, during or after an event. While these individuals must, of course, use caution, folks behind the wheel must be sure to have our eyes open and attentive at all times.
Obeying the flashing lights of school buses, as well as posted speed limits both in and out of school zones, are both important, too. We should all do our part to keep this school year free from tragedy.
