FARGO, N.D. – A 42-year-old woman accused of punching an emergency room nurse has been charged with felony simple assault.

Kathryn D. Halstead made an initial appearance in Cass County District Court this morning on the charge. A judge appointed Halstead a public defender during the hearing and set bail at $500 cash, according to court and jail records.

The West Fargo woman is accused of punching a nurse about 4:45 p.m. Monday at the MeritCare Hospital emergency room, according to Fargo police Sgt. Jeff Skuza.

Halstead was described as intoxicated, Skuza said.

If convicted of the felony charge, Halstead faces up to five years in prison.
