Obituary: Eugene SteffenEugene Steffen passed away Monday morning Oct. 20, 2008, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.
Eugene Arthur Steffen, son of Harry and Rose (Lueck) Steffen, was born Aug. 7, 1922, on his parents’ farm in Hunter Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Gene grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Following his education, Gene remained on the farm. He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 15, 1944, and served in the Philippine Islands and Japan with the 161st and 4th infantry regiments for 19 1/2 months. He also participated in the Luzon and Leyte Campaign. He was honorably discharged Nov. 22, 1946, and returned to the farm. He married Helen Kasch Sept. 9, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sioux Valley. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in Rost and Ewington townships. Eugene also did trucking during this time. They retired from farming in 1992 and moved to Worthington. In 2005, they moved to Golden Horizons in Worthington and Gene then entered the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne Nov. 1, 2006.
Gene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rost Township. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and fishing.
Gene passed away Monday morning Oct. 20, 2008, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. He was 86 years, 2 months and 13 days old.
Gene is survived by his wife, Helen Steffen, Worthington; his children, Marian (Steve) Freese, Deerwood, Sandra (Curtis) Kalfs, Okabena, Nancy (Virgil) Veen, Worthington, Karlyne (Royce) Bottin, Red Wing, Gary Steffen, Marshall, and Brian Steffen, Crookston; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gretchen Wendel, St. Peter, Bernice Tusa, Jackson, and Delores Steffen, Lakefield; and two brothers, Lloyd (Christine) Steffen, Lakefield, and Warren (Judy) Steffen, Gainsville, Florida.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harlan.
