Young writers honored

Cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25, as well as honorable mentions, were awarded at the Young Writers’ Contest “Created Equal” Awards Luncheon.

SLAYTON — Cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25, as well as honorable mentions, were awarded to the following Nov. 1 at the Young Writers’ Contest “Created Equal” Awards Luncheon:

Essay: First place, 10th– 12th grade: Beth Pekar (Ghent); second place, Chelsey Johnson; third place, Brenna Salzwedel (Okabena). First place, seventh-ninth grade: Emily Turner (Bingham Lake); second place, Lucinda Sweazey (Willmar); third place, Cassandra Ulbricht (Lakefield). Honorable mentions: Alissa Sauer (Lismore), Marcus Speakman (Lake Benton) and Camryn Dinnel (Lake Benton).

Poetry: First place, 10th-12th grade: Chelsey Johnson, (Heron Lake); second place, Mikayla Unruh (Morton); third place, Catherine Creech (Estherville, Iowa). First place, seventh-ninth grade: Kelly Kohler (Redwood Falls); second place, Camryn Dinnel (Lake Benton); third place, Gabrielle Holthe (Jackson). Honorable mentions: Chelsey Johnson (Heron Lake), Michele Pesch (Vesta), Brenna Salzwedel (Okabena), Ariel Reker (Jasper), Mikayla Unruh (Redwood Falls), Raisa Villa (Windom), Tessa Lueck (Pipestone) and Cassandra Ulbricht (Lakefield).

The writing contest is co-sponsored by the Plum Creek Library System and its affiliated member libraries.
