A Red Wing High School student attempted to attack a fellow classmate this morning with a large kitchen knife she brought from home, authorities said.

The 16-year-old female suspect was restrained by teachers after allegedly attempting to cut a male student, Red Wing police Chief Tim Sletten said.

Sletten said the suspect was then taken into custody.

The incident happened in a high school classroom just before classes started. The male victim did not suffer severe injuries, Sletten said.

Police are still investigating the attempted assault, which Sletten said may have stemmed from an earlier disagreement between students.
