A report of a sexual assault in Alexandria today turned out to be fabricated, according to authorities.

Earlier this afternoon, the Alexandria Police Department issued a news release about the assault, saying they were looking for three suspects. A 17-year-old girl told police the incident happened at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 11 when she was pulled into a vehicle near the 1200 block of Jefferson Street. She said she fought off the attack and ran way. She gave police detailed descriptions of her alleged attackers.

After detectives continued to investigate, they determined that the girl had made up the story. The department issued a news release shortly before 4 p.m. calling off the search for suspects.

Police said that potential charges against the 17-year-old are being reviewed by the county attorney's office.
