SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A winter storm watch has been issued for Thursday evening through late Thursday night for counties in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, including Lyon, Osceola, Dickinson, Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles and Jackson counties.
Snow will gradually develop Thursday afternoon, becoming widespread and potentially heavy at times Thursday night.
Snow accumulations of more than 6 inches are possible.
Low pressure will develop across the central plains on Thursday, tracking northeast across southern Iowa Thursday night.
This system appears to be warmer than the last system, meaning that more moisture will be available, the National Weather Service stated. The storm may present a risk for a period of freezing rain or sleet south of a line from Akron to Spencer, Iowa, later Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service remained uncertain about the exact timing and location of the heaviest snowfall, but stated the threat for snow in excess of six inches favored northwest Iowa and adjacent areas.
A winter storm watch means there will be a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
The National Weather Service advises people to continue to monitor the latest weather forecasts and take appropriate precautions.
