Wind chill warning still in effect

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. A wind chill warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight for southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa, including Osceola, Dickinson, Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles, Jackson and Pipestone counties.
Strong northwest winds will continue into the early evening before dropping off to 5 or 15 miles per hour or less by midnight. Areas of blowing and drifting snow will continue, but visibilities will be greater than 1 to 3 miles through the evening.
Wind chill values will be 25 to 35 below, but will not get worse overnight despite the cold overnight low temperature expected.
A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.
1:25 a.m. Saturday Update
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service advised people not to travel during the blizzard warning, which now begins at noon today and ends at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service's winter weather advisory ends at noon and the blizzard warning goes into effect at that time.
A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely, leading to white out conditions and making traveling extremely dangerous.
"Do not travel," the National Weather Service advised. "If you must, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded... stay with your vehicle."

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has extended its winter weather advisory for the region to 3 p.m. Saturday. The advisory covers Osceola, Dickinson, Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles, Jackson and Pipestone counties.
12:00 a.m. Friday Update
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch, which will be in effect for the southwest Minnesota area from Saturday morning through Sunday morning. The previously issued winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. today.
Snow accumulations from 3 to 5 inches are expected by early Friday morning, with the highest amounts along and south of Interstate 90.
A second storm system will affect the area over the weekend, with snow expected to spread into the area from the west early Saturday and continue through Sunday morning.
The snow will be accompanied by northwest winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour, especially Saturday night and Sunday, bringing the potential for blizzard conditions to the area.
A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Travelers should be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibility, and use caution while driving.
A blizzard watch means there is a potential for falling or blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibility. This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A winter weather advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. Friday morning for counties in southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa, including Lyon, Osceola, Dickinson, Murray, Cottonwood, Nobles and Jackson counties.
Snow will gradually develop this evening, becoming widespread and heavy at times tonight.
Snow accumulations are expected to range between 3 and 5 inches, with the heaviest snowfall south of Interstate 90.
A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Drivers are reminded to be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, using caution while driving.
Low pressure is developing across eastern Colorado today, then tracking east and northeast into Illinois by Friday morning. Snow will develop and become more widespread in the evening and continue overnight.
Before the snow tapers off early Friday, accumulations are expected to range from 3 inches north of Interstate 90 to 8 inches around Storm Lake and Ida Grove.
