WORTHINGTON — Tatie Conradie wasn’t just the first local baby born in 2009.
As of Friday afternoon, he had the year all to himself.
Women’s Center Head Nurse Mary Huls said at 3 p.m. Friday that no other babies had been born at Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington in 2009.
Tatie was born at 3:05 a.m. Friday, weighing in at seven pounds, three ounces and measuring 19 inches.
He came a little bit earlier than expected for dad Frans Conradie, of Rustenburg, South Africa, and mom Lorie Breuer, of Ocheyedan, Iowa.
Breuer was due Jan. 5 — but she’s somewhat of an expert at childbirth. Tatie joins Breuer’s other children, 7-year-old twins J.J. and Courtney, Willow, 9 and Zoë, 15.
“It was longer than I expected it would be. It was long enough,” she said of her nine-hour delivery. Only her twins took longer.
The pregnancy was OK, said Breuer.
“No cravings, but I had side pains. He kicked me all the time,” she said.
“She got beat up a lot,” joked Conradie.
Because her youngest children are 7, preparing for Tatie’s arrival meant a new round of shopping.
“We were busy getting baby stuff again. We don’t have baby stuff anymore,” Breuer said.
Breuer and Conradie both work at a pork company near Harris, Iowa.
Tatie is also welcomed by grandparents Mark and Verna Salzman, Ocheyedan, Iowa; grandmother Anita Conradie, South Africa and great-grandparents Roger and Ruth Bloes, Sibley, Iowa.
The overall number of births at Sanford seems to be down in 2008. Huls said numbers are not finalized but a little more than 400 babies were born there last year, lower than the 442 born in 2007.
