WORTHINGTON — On his MySpace Web site, he billed himself as a 15-year-old boy from Raymond, but in reality, he is a 37-year-old man who is also a registered predatory offender.
Shannon Keith Hauser, who used the name Bryan Guptil to set up a Yahoo account and the MySpace account, pleaded guilty in Nobles County District Court Wednesday to dissemination of pictorial representations of minors.
He was charged in early December 2008 with both dissemination and possession of child pornography after uploading more than 160 photos onto a Web site for sharing and managing photos. The site is a Yahoo company, and Hauser admitted in court he thought he was uploading the pictures to a Yahoo mail account.
Following the IP address he used to log in, agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were able to tie the Guptil accounts to Hauser via an Internet account in Waite Park.
But Hauser has already moved to Worthington to live with a woman he had met on a free dating site called Plentyoffish.com. The woman he moved in with had an 8-year-old daughter living in the home.
“Did the woman know about all of this?” Judge Jeffrey Flynn asked Hauser Tuesday.
“Not at the time,” he answered.
Hauser admitted he knew the photos were of minor children engaging in sex acts, and that he would exchange the pictures with others and download them to his computer. Law enforcement officers seized 27 CDs and DVDs from Hauser when he was arrested, along with a desktop computer, a flash drive and his cell phone.
Hauser has previous convictions of criminal sexual conduct, failure to register as a sex offender, theft, conspiracy to commit theft and arson in Kandiyohi, Meeker and Swift Counties. He told authorities he, like the fictitious 15-year-old, was originally from Raymond, and has also lived in St. Cloud.
The plea agreement Hauser entered into includes the dismissal of the possession charge, 51 months incarceration, 10 years of supervised release. The agreement also includes sex offender treatment, which Nobles County Attorney Gordon Moore said was at the request of Hauser.
A pre-sentence investigation was ordered by Flynn and will be completed before sentencing.
