SWIMMING: Engelkes, Skog and Sorensen win three times
ALBERT LEA — Kari Engelkes, Tim Skog and Dave Sorensen each won three events Saturday to lead the Worthington YMCA Stingrays swim team at a four-team meet in Albert Lea.
ALBERT LEA — Kari Engelkes, Tim Skog and Dave Sorensen each won three events Saturday to lead the Worthington YMCA Stingrays swim team at a four-team meet in Albert Lea.
Each swimmer already has qualified for the regional swim meet and will join teammates Cosmo Morgan, Madison Neuberger and Cameron Jenson at the regional meet March 28 and 29 at the University of Minnesota.
Engelkes, a 17-year-old who competed in the girls’ 18-and-under division, won the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.54), the 50 free (28.11 seconds) and the 100 free (1:00.94).
Skog, a 13-year-old who competed in the boys’ 14-and-under age group, won the 50 free (28.53 seconds), the 100 backstroke (1:23.94) and the 100 free (1:08.85).
Sorensen, a 17-year-old who competed in the boys’ 18-and-under division, won the 50 free (26.94 seconds), the 100 backstroke (1:18.37) and the 100 free (1:01.71).
Engelkes, Skog and Sorenesen each also participated on two first-place relay teams.
Engelkes, Nicole Janssen, Sarah Janssen and Svenja Wieser teamed to win both the 200 medley relay (2:34.82) and the 200 free relay (2:14.26).
Skog and Sorensen teamed with Dillon Pedersen and Matt Sorensen to win both the 200 medley relay (2:23.09) and the 200 free relay (2:05.11).
Morgan, an 8-year-old who competed in the boys’ 8-and-under division, won both the 25 free (18.12 seconds) and the 50 free (45.25 seconds).
Pedersen, Neuberger, Jenson, Oliver Wolyniec, Sarah Janssen and Nicole Janssen each won a race Saturday for the Stingrays, who recorded 17 first-place individual finishes, seven second-place individual finishes, and 13 third-place individual finishes.
The Stingrays will begin the section tournament Feb. 1 at St. Mary’s University in Winona.
