PREP WRESTLING: Worthington wins pair of duals on road; W/ML/B-O downs JCC
SLAYTON — It was a team effort Tuesday night for the Worthington wrestling team.
SLAYTON — It was a team effort Tuesday night for the Worthington wrestling team.
Wrestling in a triangular against Fairmont and Fulda/Murray County Central, the Trojans came away with two victories.
“These are two important wins,” Worthington head coach Mark Prunty said. “These teams are in the south. Not only are they in our section, but they are in the south section, so that puts us possibly in the top three in our section as far as the seedings that are coming up for the team sections.”
Worthington defeated Fairmont 45-24 before edging F/MCC 36-35.
“It was a great team effort,” Prunty said. “Looking through our lineup, we had kids picking up pins for us, we had kids staying off their backs for us and we could probably point to six, seven, eight, probably 10 different kids on the team who, because of what they did, made up that extra point. Total team effort. The kids were excited and it was a great dual meet. It was a good night of wrestling.”
Against Fairmont in the first dual of the night, Worthington’s Jared Kinley and Joey Kinley each picked up falls in the first four weights as the Trojans had a 15-6 lead.
Dayton Williamson later pinned his foe, increasing the Trojan lead to 36-12.
From there, Julio Casillas, Jake Steffl and Jordan Schroeder each picked up victories as Worthington cruised to a 45-24 victory.
However, the match against F/MCC wasn’t decided as early.
Elissa Reinsma started with a major decision victory for F/MCC at 103, and Austin Kluis followed with a fall in 1:06 as F/MCC had a 10-0 lead early.
However, consecutive victories from Kyle Wiese and Joey Kinley cut the deficit to 10-9.
From there, F/MCC’s Justin Reinsma and Jordan Anderson each recorded victories to push the lead back to 10 points, 19-9.
Andy Henning won by a forfeit at 171, giving F/MCC a 35-21 lead.
But that would be the last points for the home team.
Worthington’s Casillas and Steffl each won their matches, cutting the deficit to 35-30.
Schroeder finished the duel with a forfeit victory, sending Worthington to the one-point win.
Worthington will be at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Tuesday.
