EDGELEY (AP) — A judge says horses on a farm near Edgeley were “unjustifiably exposed” to cold weather without access to nutritional hay or water other than snow.
Authorities took about 35 horses and two donkeys from the Richard Musland farm. They said at least half a dozen horses were found dead and three of those seized had to be euthanized.
Judge Daniel Narum gave LaMoure County temporary custody of the animals.
Musland told authorities that three horses died of ringworm but said the surviving animals were fine. He has declined comment.
No charges have been filed.
Dr. Susan Keller, the state veterinarian, said authorities are trying to determine whether the animals died because of the harsh winter or due to lack of care.
Keller said that in extreme cold, farmers must make sure their animals get enough food.
