MAHNOMEN – The Sheriff’s Department said an Amber Alert issued through cell phone text messages Monday night was a hoax.
A text message was sent to an unknown number of cell phones in the region advising of a kidnapping. The message read:
“AMBER ALERT: A 7-year-old girl was taken by a man driving a newer silver truck, license number 72B381 in the Mahnomen area. FWD plzz!!”
A Mahnomen County dispatcher said she was aware of the text messages, but the sheriff’s office did not issue the Amber Alert. Calls about the text message started around 7:20 p.m., she said.
The origin of the text messages was unknown Monday.
