BRANDON, S.D. — Worthington’s softball team committed more errors and issued more walks than it recorded hits Tuesday in a 6-1 loss to Brandon Valley (S.D.).

Jordan Wiertzema, who suffered the loss for the Trojans, allowed just three hits and three earned runs in four and two-thirds innings. But the senior issued six walks, and Worthington’s defense committed five errors, leading to three unearned runs and a non-conference loss.

“Jordan pitched a great game on the mound again, but the defense kind of let us down a little bit and a few too many walks got us in a little bit of trouble,” Worthington coach Sam Baumgartner said. “The errors really hurt us again. If we cut down on errors, we’re right there.”

Wiertzema scored Lynn Harberts on a single in the first inning, but Worthington went scoreless in the ensuing six frames.

The Trojans trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, in which Brandon Valley scored three runs to break the game open.

Harberts went 2-for-4 with a run, and Wiertzema went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Worthington, which had just four hits.

The Trojans (1-4) will travel to face Jackson County Central in a doubleheader Thursday.
