SECTION 3A SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: RRC/W-WG downs Windom, falls to Wabasso

WANDA — Audra Schmidt twirled a perfect game — no hits, no walks, no errors — as the Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove Falcons defeated Windom 4-0 in a Section 3A softball playoff game Tuesday.

Schmidt struck out 11 Eagles and the Falcon defense made the plays on the other 10 outs.

At the plate, Steph Maras (2-for-4), Klarissa Larsen (1-for-2, RBI) and Sheila Riley (1-for-3, double) were the leaders for the Falcons, who advanced to play Wabasso — a 6-1 winner over Lakeview in the other game in the same bracket.

Steph Utech pitched five innings for Windom, recording three strikeouts, while walking four and giving up two hits.

The Falcons scored a run on two hits and a walk off Windom’s Brianna Ramos in the sixth inning.

Wabasso 10, RRC/W-WG 0 (6 innings)

WABASSO — The top-seeded Rabbits pounded out 11 hits and played errorless ball, advancing in the winner’s bracket with a shutout victory over the Falcons.

Wabasso’s Ashley Fennern twirled all six innings, striking out six, while walking just one and giving up only two hits.

At the plate, Tori Altermatt was 3-for-4 with a double for the Rabbits (18-1).

Schmidt again went the distance (into the sixth) without walking a batter. She struck out seven, giving her an 18-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the day.

Maras had a leadoff single in the first inning to get the Falcons (10-10) off to a good start.

But Fennern silenced the RRC/W-WG bats until Steffani Pankonin singled in the sixth.

The Falcons play Adrian Area today at 5:30 p.m. in an elimination game in Windom.

Windom 7, Lakeview 6

WANDA — Abby Lund capped a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a walk-off double, as the Eagles rallied with a three-run effort in the bottom of the seventh.

The Eagles were leading 3-0, but the Lakers crossed the plate six times in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.

Windom came back with one run in the bottom of the inning and then — after Ramos (who pitched the final one and one-third innings) held Lakeview scoreless — the Eagles rallied for the victory.

Summer Stevens (3-for-4) and Mikayla Bergendahl (2-for-3) also had multiple hits for the Eagles, who play Edgerton today at 4 p.m. in Windom.

Utech took the circle for the first five and two-thirds innings, facing 24 Lakeview batters, giving up just three earned runs on two walks and five hits, while striking out two.

Ramos struck out two of the five batters she pitched to, while yielding just one hit, no walks and no runs.

Lakeview finishes its season with a 3-11-1 record.
