OLIVIA — The name of the driver of a van that backed into a tent at a campground near Morton Sunday morning that resulted in the death of a 4-month infant has been released.
Assistant Renville County Attorney Glen Jacobsen said Nicolle Prechel, 31, of Redwood County, who was arrested by the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, was booked into the county jail on charges of driving while intoxicated and criminal vehicular homicide.
Jacobsen said this morning he was anticipating that those charges would be filed, but the charges have not yet been finalized because he hadn’t seen the report from the sheriff’s office. Jacobsen said charges would be determined after he reads the report.
The sheriff’s office had not yet released the names of the infant and the child’s mother who were dragged under the vehicle when the van’s driver allegedly backed over and through the tent at the Renville County camp-ground near Morton at about 8:40 a.m. Sunday.
The baby was pronounced dead upon arrival in the emergency room at the Redwood Falls Area Hospital, the sheriff’s office said. The mother was in stable condition at the hospital.
