RED WING - The Red Wing Republican Eagle will publish two days a week instead of five days effective Sept. 2.

RED WING - The Red Wing Republican Eagle will publish two days a week instead of five days effective Sept. 2.

The newspaper will have print editions Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting Sept. 2. The R-E will continue to post breaking and spot news stories daily at www.republican-eagle.com.

“Economics and the readers' desire for local-only information are the predominant reasons for this decision," said Publisher Steve Messick, who announced the new strategy to staff members Tuesday afternoon.

"We will deliver more local news to subscribers -- but twice a week in larger newspapers instead of in five smaller papers. This change will allow our staff to concentrate only on the local market."

The print and online editions often will carry different and complementary content, he said.

Subscribers who paid in advance will automatically have their subscriptions extended. Subscribers who use EasyPay- will have their rates adjusted down to $5.99 a month.

The annual subscription for the twice-weekly newspaper will be $79 local market. Out of market will be $98, and the single copy will be $1 at the newsstand. All subscribers will receive a note in the mail explaining these changes in the next three weeks.
