SLAYTON — It might be a rivalry between two football teams, but when Murray County Central and Fulda kickoff tonight, it’s about earning a victory.
“The rivalry between Fulda and us is always there, but it’s early in the season; we’ve only played two games,” MCC head coach Chris Davis said. “Really, it’s going to be just about playing the game and seeing who comes out on top.”
MCC (1-1) is coming off a tough loss at Adrian last week.
Fulda (1-1) ran into a tough Minneota team a week ago.
“They’ve had a tale of two games, kind of like us,” Davis said. “They had one game where they put up a lot of points and the next game they got to face a top-tiered team like Minneota. It’s really hard to judge. From what I’ve seen on tape, they are a good team, so we’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game just to compete.”
Fulda head coach Greg Erdman isn’t seeing a high-scoring shootout tonight.
“MCC definitely has the weapons to score, they showed that against Lakeview,” he said. “But they have the ability to play some really good defense, they showed that against Adrian. Holding Adrian to 13 points was quite a feat, I thought.
“We have some weapons on our side so we can score, but we like to play defense, also. Hopefully, it’s a low-scoring game.”
Added to the rivalry and the importance of a Little Sioux Conference game will be the fact that it’s MCC’s Homecoming.
“We do look at it as a rivalry; it’s always a good game to win,” Erdman said. “But right now, we just want to take it one game at a time and try to beat them.”
In another key game of the night, second-ranked Luverne (2-0) travels to face No. 9 Jackson County Central (2-0) in a Southwest Conference battle.
In a non-conference game, Windom (1-1) will host New Ulm (1-1).
Southwestern United (0-2) will look for its first win tonight when it travels to Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin (1-1) in a Southern Minnesota Conference clash.
Red Rock Central (1-1) will host Wabasso (2-0) in a conference game.
In Little Sioux action, Adrian (1-1) travels to Ortonville (0-2), while Canby (1-1) visits Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-1).
Westbrook-Walnut Grove takes its perfect 2-0 record on the road to Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther (1-1).
Hills-Beaver Creek (1-1) will travel to Cleveland (1-1), while Nicollet (2-0) will face Edgerton/Ellsworth (1-1) in Ellsworth for Homecoming.
In Iowa, Harris-Lake Park (1-2) travels to face Graettinger/Terril (2-1) in an 8-man District 2 contest.
Class 2A, District 1 will feature a trio of local matchups.
Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (1-2) will hope to hand Rock Valley/Boyden-Hull (3-0) its first loss when the Lions take to the road.
Sibley-Ocheyedan (1-2) travels to Spirit Lake (0-3), while Sheldon travels to Western Christian in a battle of 3-0 teams.
