Winning Essay: Books, art, science make school a great place

School is a great place because I get to do things I enjoy. Some of the subjects I enjoy are reading, art and science because I learn many things in them.

Reading is fun. This Fall I read a book called The Tale of Despereaux. It is a story about a mouse with big ears who goes on a journey to save a princess called, "Pea." This book is a very good adventure story and it kept my attention so well that I read it in five days.

We do art projects all year long. One of the projects we did was called, "Name Art." What we did was write our names on a large piece of paper, then we colored around our names. We hung our projects up in the hall so others could see them. I used many colors like green, blue, yellow, grey, and red.

In first grade for science, we had meal worms, which later turned into black beetles. The meal worms were fun because we got to feed them and we could see them change. We fed the meal worms carrots, which they drank the juice out of, and they also ate oatmeal.

There are other things that make school a great place to be. Some of these are being with my friends and recess. These and reading, art, and science are why school is a great place.
