FERGUS FALLS, Minn. — The Humane Society in Otter Tail County will reopen this week after an animal virus forced it to shut down two weeks ago.

The shelter was closed after four puppies died and several cats got sick. A shelter manager blames a virus called Parvovirus.

The Humane Society says someone brought in a sick puppy in late December. Officials thought it was an isolated illness, but then other puppies got sick.

Cats don’t contract the virus, but a number of felines there started to come down with upper respiratory infections. That’s when the center’s veterinarian advised a temporary shutdown.

Officials say the virus will have run its course by Wednesday.

The Daily Journal of Fergus Falls reports that Parvovirus mainly affects puppies younger than six months old.
