MARSHFIELD, Wis. — A Marshfield man is accused of abandoning five dogs in an apartment without food or water for at least 12 days.

Police are seeking felony charges against the 20-year-old.

Officers who performed a welfare check at the man’s apartment Friday say they found an adult pit bull and four puppies living among their feces.

The Marshfield News-Herald says the dogs were taken to a veterinary hospital, where four of the five are showing signs of improvement.

The dogs were malnourished, with their spines and ribs visible. A veterinarian says two of the older puppies had gone at least a month without food.

The man allegedly told police he though a roommate was taking care of the dogs while he was out of town. Police say no roommate is listed on the apartment lease.
