Problems remain after storm leaves Dakotas

BISMARCK (AP) — A storm system that brought ice, snow and strong winds has moved out of the Dakotas and roads are starting to reopen, but many problems remain.

North Dakota transportation officials reopened the stretch of Interstate 94 that was closed between Mandan and New Salem after a crash involving more than 20 vehicles. But portions of other interstates in the Dakotas remained closed Tuesday morning.

Thousands of people also remained without power in the two states, and the National Weather Service said dangerous wind chills had settled over much of northern North Dakota.

In South Dakota, state officials were working to get drinking water to the Cheyenne River Reservation. The state provided generators over the weekend to get the water system back online but officials say mechanical problems have led to a flooded basement at the water treatment plant in Eagle Butte, damaging equipment.
