WORTHINGTON — Wintry weather may have hampered attendance to a small degree at Saturday’s Daily Globe Bridal Fair and Prom Extravaganza, but those who came to the annual event were nevertheless filled with enthusiasm.
More than 100 people passed through American Reformed Church to see two fashion shows and visit a variety of vendors, and those looking to drum up business expressed their pleasure with the goings-on.
“I was here last year for the first time and it was a great show for me,” said Stacey Overgaauw of Lake Wilson, who owns and operates Stacey’s Country Boutique, midway through Saturday’s event. “We had a wonderful turnout, and that’s why I came back — I’m looking for business. So far, it’s going great.”
In addition to showing off her merchandise, Overgaauw was promoting her business’ upcoming open house, which is set for 3 to 7 p.m. March 7 at her home, 410 141st St. More information is available at www.staceyscountryboutique.com.
Interlude Bridal Shoppe of Sioux Falls, S.D., had plenty of beautiful apparel to show off, as bridal and prom shows, respectively, showcased a variety of dresses from the event co-sponsor. Also serving as co-sponsor was The Stag Clothiers of Worthington, which had a display table and two men modeling tuxes.
Among the other businesses participating Saturday was Main Street Kids of Worthington.
“It’s something different for us to do,” store employee Tai Nordby said. “This is the only bridal show we do. It’s fun to see all the brides and let them know we carry formal wear for kids and they can buy locally.”
Sandy Brockhouse made the trip from Lake Benton to show off products of AdvoCare, a nutritional supplement company. One sample she was providing, Spark, becomes an energy drink when mixed with water, and includes neuro-actives, vitamins and minerals in a sugar-free formula.
“I’ve been in the direct selling business for a while,” said Brockhouse, who has set up a Web site at www.feelfabulous.net.
“I’ve tried a number of things, like Weight Watchers, NutriSystems. … I’ve been on this (AdvoCare products) for 23 days, and I’ve lost four inches off my waist and three inches off my hips.”
Attendeees of the Bridal Fair and Prom Extravaganza also had the opportunity to sample food from regional caterers and enjoy the music of harpist Marcella Slater, who provided live accompaniment for the bridal fashion show.
“It’s nice because they don’t have a lot of the same thing,” Slater said of the annual event, which took place for the sixth time. “I go to ones in Sioux Falls, and there are 10 to 15 of the same thing, and there’s tons of competition. Here I am, the only live performer, and there is a nice hometown atmosphere.”
Dance music accompanied the prom fashion show, during which Worthington High School senior Randa Knutson modeled for a second consecutive year.
“Robyn (Moser) from The Stag asked me if I would do this again, and I thought it would fun,” Knutson said. “It was lots of fun putting on all the different dresses and showing them off.”
Knutson said she liked a couple of the dresses enough that she was considering buying one for her prom.
“I can always get the dress first,” she said. “I can find a date later.”
