Brief: Community Center roof collapses

HERON LAKE — The Heron Lake Community Center roof collapsed Saturday afternoon under excessive snow load, causing approximately $50,000 in damage.

“It’s a big mess,” said Brenda Martin-Granstra, Heron Lake clerk-treasurer. “The best thing was — there were no people there.”

An approximately 40 feet by 40 feet section of the roof came down over the building’s large hall, which was empty at the time. The building, owned by the city of Heron Lake, was built in 1995 and was insured.

The city is calling people who have booked the hall and asking them to rebook events in other locations, from weddings to the Heron Lake-Okabena Community Foundation fundraiser.

The cost of the cancelled bookings is unknown and will depend on how long it takes to get the center up and running again, Martin-Granstra said.
