District 518, other area schools will open before Labor Day

WORTHINGTON (AP) — District 518 and 24 other Minnesota school districts will begin the next academic year Aug. 23, school officials learned Friday. “I think it means an opportunity to get seven to 10 days more of academic opportunity to do better on test results,” said District 518 Superintendent John Landgaard.

“Our hopes are that we can provide some staff development and training experiences for our teachers. It will help create more effectiveness in their abilities. We already have quality teachers but we want to make them even better.”

The districts that will start school Aug. 23 are: Adrian, Brewster, Canby, Comfrey, Edgerton, Hendricks, Hills-Beaver Creek, Ivanhoe, Jackson County Central, Lakeview, Luverne, Lynd, Marshall, Milroy, Minneota, Mountain Lake, Redwood Area, Round Lake, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Tracy Area (Tracy & Balaton), Westbrook-Walnut Grove, Windom and Worthington.

Minnesota Education Commissioner Alice Seagren approved the plan, which allows districts to bypass a state law preventing schools from beginning before Labor Day.

Some critics say the move could prevent students in 4-H from presenting at the State Fair. But participating superintendents say they’ll work to still give students the State Fair experience.

“Kids who want to participate in the State Fair won’t be penalized, and we’ll work with those families that will be attending the State Fair,” Landgaard said.
