Paul Rambsey, a section ride captain for the Patriot Guard Riders, was among the many Friday that welcomed back Army National Guard soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 151st Field Artillery unit.

“A little over a year ago, we had a send-off for these troops,” Ramsbey remarked Friday. “Six hundred left. Today, we’ll welcome home 600.”

That comment alone speaks volumes of the efforts and abilities of soldiers from our region. After spending a year in Iraq, they were more than worthy of receiving the kind of welcome reserved for heroes — and that’s what they got.

We are beyond thankful for those who put their lives in harm’s way to represent our nation ... and all of the rest of us here at home. But we are also grateful to the folks from around the area who took time from their schedules on Friday to greet the soldiers upon their return. From the fire trucks and ambulances that made up a procession to the folks that waited along U.S. 59 waving flags and cheering, our Army National Guard men and women got the kind of salute and support they deserved.
