WORTHINGTON — Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn, gave Worthington a miss on Saturday to attend the funeral of a U.S. Marine killed in Afghanistan last week, according to Glenn Thuringer, manager of economic development and membership services for the Worthington Regional Economic Development Corporation.

Lance Corporal Curtis Swenson, a Mayo High School graduate, was laid to rest in a family plot with both Franken and Gov. Tim Pawlenty present.

Franken, who was scheduled to make a stop in Worthington Saturday for an informal listening session at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce conference room, was to be touring through southwest Minnesota. His office contacted Thuringer’s office Friday afternoon with the news the senator would not be coming.

The listening session, Thuringer said, will be rescheduled at a later date.
