DES MOINES, IA – Hy-Vee customers throughout the Midwest contributed a total of $100,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund during Hy-Vee’s “Help Us Help Haiti” campaign.
The funds collected will be used by the Red Cross to provide ongoing assistance to victims of January’s devastating earthquake in Haiti.
Hy-Vee kicked off the campaign at the end of January with a $50,000 corporate donation to the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross. After several customers asked how they could contribute to earthquake relief efforts, Hy-Vee launched the month-long “Help Us Help Haiti” fundraising campaign. Customers could designate cash donations of any amount to be added to their grocery totals at checkout, with 100 percent of the funds collected going directly to the Red Cross.
Ken Waller, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Hy-Vee, said customers’ generosity will help the Red Cross continue its vital response efforts in Haiti.
“Along with meeting victims’ immediate needs for food, water and health care services, the Red Cross has begun the long-term work of helping Haitians rebuild their homes and their communities,” Waller said. “Hy-Vee is proud to support the Red Cross in this effort, and we’re grateful to the thousands of customers who have joined us in reaching out to the people of Haiti.”
