ROCHESTER, Minn. — Animal officials in Rochester are praising a local farmer who helped save 17 abandoned puppies.

David Distad said he had just visited his brother and was walking home early Thursday when several small balls of fur caught his eye.

He said he saw the tiny puppies in a culvert, some lying on the ground and others running back and forth.

He called Paws and Claws Humane Society in Rochester. That prompted an immediate visit from Rachel Ramin and her manager.

Ramin told WCCO the puppies were thin and very hungry. She helped load the puppies in a car and took them to the shelter.

She said the little guys were lucky Distad happened along when he did.

The puppies are 2 to 4 months old. They’re expected to be available for adoption in a week.
