WORTHINGTON - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources considers the danger of fire to be high in southern Minnesota, very high in central Minnesota and extreme in the northern part of the state today.
A "high" fire danger rating means "fires start easily and spread at a fast rate. All fine dead fuels ignite readily and fires start easily from most causes," according to the Minnesota DNR. "Unattended campfires are likely to escape. Fires spread rapidly and short-distance spotting is common. High intensity burning may develop on slopes, or in concentrations of fine fuel. Fire may become serious and difficult to control unless ... hit hard and fast while small."
Burning permits are required for southern Minnesota.
